Half Ounce (1/2 oz) Gold Krugerrand Coins
The ever popular gold Krugerrand issued by South Africa comes in four different sizes. The 1/2oz Krugerrand was first minted in the year 1980, and is a popular gold coin that contains exactly 1/2 troy ounce of pure gold. The gold is alloyed with copper, and the resulting purity is .9166 fine gold, that's 22 karat gold. The total weight of the half ounce Krugerrand coin is .545 troy ounces (16.97 grams) and it has a diameter of 27 millimeters. Like all Krugerrand coins it has no legal tender value and sells at a small markup over the bullion price of gold.
For gold investors who would like to invest in a smaller denomination than the full one ounce gold Krugerrand, the half ounce coin is a superb investment vehicle.
The design of the 1/2 oz Krugerrand is the same as that of the larger Krugerrand. The obverse has a picture of South African president Paul Kruger, and the reverse features the national symbol of South Africa, the ebullient Springbok.
The 1997 mintage, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Krugerrand, was only 30 coins.
