Quarter Ounce (1/4 oz) Gold Krugerrand Coins
The 1/4 ounce gold Krugerrand opens up the joy of gold investing to many people who may otherwise find it difficult to afford the larger Krugerrand denominations. Like the other Krugerrands, the 1/4oz coin is 22 karat gold (91.7% pure) alloyed with copper. It contains exactly .25 troy ounces of pure gold. The total weight of the coin is .273 troy ounces or 8.48 grams. It is 22.00 millimeters in diameter.
As with the other Krugerrands, the obverse features Paul Kruger, the first South African president, and the reverse features the beautiful South African Springbok antelope.
The 1/4 oz Krugerrand was first issued in 1980, with a mintage of 534,000 coins. The 1997 proof, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Krugerrand, amounted to 30 coins, and is collectible.
